Coastal Protection for Beach Nesting Birds in Texas
Coastal Texas is a home for beach-nesting birds and vibrant colonial waterbird islands. As tides shift and nesting sites are disturbed, gathering strong breeding season data and engaging the public are essential steps to protecting these special birds and the habitats they depend on.
Join Audubon Texas for an inspiring Bird Friendly Webinar with Anna Deichmann, Gulf Coastal Program Director with American Bird Conservancy and Tim Forrester, Coastal Avian Biologist for Audubon Texas on coastal work in Texas. They will share insights on the coalition efforts underway to safeguard shore and colonial waterbirds across Texas and provide updates from this year’s coastal nesting season.
Texas has already seen remarkable conservation successes. The Brown Pelican, once endangered, rebounded thanks to years of dedicated protection of breeding islands. But challenges remain. Coastal birds continue to face serious threats from development, off-road vehicles, and human disturbance. Just last year, Struvelucy Island in West Galveston Bay, one of the few Black Skimmer nesting sites in the area, was abandoned after repeated human disturbances.
