Dr. Benjamin Hutchins Assistant Director & Groundwater Ecologist Edwards Aquifer Research and Data Center – Texas State University
Texas groundwater has been a contentious topic and conservation priority for over 100 years. Millions of Texans rely on groundwater for drinking, farming, industry, and recreation. However, besides a few well-known species, most Texans don’t realize that groundwater habitats in Texas, from the Trans-Pecos to the Piney Woods, are home to hundreds of strange and unusual species. Many of these species are extremely rare and barely studied. What is groundwater, and what habitats are hidden beneath our feet? Why are these creatures important, and how can we study and protect them? Discover some of the most diverse groundwater sites in the world (yes right here in Texas!) and learn about some of Texas’ most mysterious creatures.
