I’ve stayed involved in BPTMN because our chapter does two things well. First, our chapter excels in providing quality advanced training opportunities including the speakers at our monthly meetings. They have raised my awareness and inspired me in so many ways. Because of advanced training, I continue to grow as a naturalist. Secondly, our chapter does a great job of providing a wide variety of volunteer opportunities to choose from. I was a teacher and educational diagnostician for many years, so I needed weekend projects I could do close to my home in Carrollton. I found my niche! I have been active in Stream Team since 2016. In fact, I met my Stream Team partner during training, and we’ve been together ever since. Once a month we meet at Furneaux Creek in Carrollton to conduct tests that determine the health of the creek. We are joined by amateur entomologists who look for macroinvertebrates in the creek. Our data is submitted to Texas State University’s Meadow Center for Water and the Environment, who protect 191,000 miles of Texas waterways. We are the canaries in the coalmine! I also participate in Carol’s milkweed grow out initiative and birding projects like FeederWatch and the Great Backyard Bird Count. In the past, I’ve volunteered at the Holifield Science Center and wrote book recommendations for our chapter newsletter.
