Class of 2025 Week 1 – Topic: Ecology Speaker: Sam Kieschnick

Cali Bakker, Class of 2024

2025 new class week 1

Week 1
Topic: Ecology
Speaker: Sam Kieschnick

And we’re off to a fantastic start for the 2025 training class! On Wednesday, we met for our first class of the year – Ecology, taught by Sam Kieschnick.

We learned so many things about asking ecological questions, species interactions, evolution, and our role in the environment. One fun fact that I learned is that there are parasites of parasites. Wow!

Sam also provided encouragement and topics to think about. We were reminded that, as master naturalists, we demonstrate optimism and hope for our world simply by showing up and doing what we do. We were also reminded that thanks to biodiversity, it’s virtually impossible to be bored as a master naturalist. (If you do feel bored, talk to some of our wonderful new class members and their enthusiasm will help you feel engaged again)

I’d like to extend a “homework” assignment given during class to all of us – sit with a species (any species) and ponder or wrestle with questions about ecology and connection. It could be enjoyable AND help us feel a deeper understanding and connection to the world around us.
