Hello Blackland Prairie Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists,
October’s newsletter brings news of major successes and calls for continued action! The Blackland Prairie Chapter is celebrating recognition, with Laura Kuwayama’s Monarch View Park Project receiving our second Pollinators for Texas Award and a $4,000 grant from H-E-B. Building on this momentum, the Heritage Farmstead Native Prairie Garden Project, championed by Heather Fell, earned its Monarch Waystation Certification through dedicated volunteer work and shares fantastic photos from Brenda Clark. Speaking of volunteers, Paulette Platko and Mary Abercrombie reported their largest turnout ever for the September Last Saturday workday at McKinney Greens Gardens and are NOW asking the community for help to transplant over 400 native plants on Saturday, October 25th. For our next chapter meeting, Laurie Sheppard is scheduled to present on endangered butterflies on October 14th at 7 PM, while Leah Justice is organizing another seed swap table and Leah’s submission on The Nature Conservancy’s habitat revival efforts is a fantastic read. Finally, John W. Garbutt offers a personal touch with his “My Favorite Things” summer reflection, recalling the sighting of a Barn Owl at the solstice.
