10/26/2025 by mconnally

Join us on October 29th, at 7 PM CST, for a Deep Dive, with Laurie Sheppard presenting on the Seasons of Geese.
Click here to view our Calendar.

Topic: Seasons of Geese

Get ready for a deep dive into the fascinating world of feathered, migrating friends! As Laurie Sheppard prepared to talk about the spectacular Snow Geese, she realized she couldn’t ignore their incredible cousins that grace Collin County. This presentation, “Seasons of Geese,” will explore the rhythms and dazzling diversity of all the goose species that visit the refuge. She’ll pay special attention to the striking white geese—the majestic Snow Geese and their smaller relatives, the Ross’s Geese—covering their migration patterns, unique behaviors, and vital role in prairie wetland ecology and flyway conservation. Don’t miss this journey through the annual goose calendar!

Speaker:  Laurie Sheppard is a certified Texas Master Naturalist (BPTMN, Class of 2017) with a primary interest in butterflies. She is also a dedicated birder who has identified over 280 species in Grayson County. She often participates in the Hagerman NWR Weekly Bird Census and is a Sector Leader for the Annual Hagerman Christmas Bird Count. With winter approaching, visitors to Hagerman NWR are looking forward to the annual spectacle of thousands of Snow Geese feeding in the fields and flying overhead. Still, Snow Geese are not the only migratory geese to visit the refuge. Laurie will tell us about the “Seasons of Geese” in Grayson and Collin County in our October “Deep Dive”.
Laurie is a long-time volunteer at Hagerman NWR, currently serving as a Butterfly Garden Docent, a Tram Driver, a Nature Nook staffer, a writer/editor for the Featherless Flyer, and a member of the Friends of Hagerman Board of Directors. She is an avid photographer and regularly shares her images of butterflies, birds, and other wildlife on social media and in the Friends of Hagerman’s public outreach materials.
