What: Choctaw Cultural Day at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge
Join us for a fun-filled Saturday on May 11th at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge as we celebrate the heritage of the third-largest Indigenous peoples of the United States. The Choctaw Cultural Center will bring several activities and exhibits to Hagerman NWR: show and tell cultural artifacts, weapons tables, stickball demonstrations, atlatl demonstrations, dance, and other activities will be presented by the Native American Choctaws.
Before the Choctaw events begin, enjoy a Bird Walk with Jack Chiles at 8 AM
After the Bird Walk, attend the 10 AM presentation: Second Saturday: Woodpeckers with Dr. Wayne Meyer, Ornithologist (Note: topic has changed.)
12:00 Noon: Choctaw Cultural Events begins with a lecture by Dr.Ian Thompson, “Oktak: Choctaw for Prairie:” Tallgrassprairie’s deep connection with Choctaw culture, language, and history.
1:00 Tram Tour of the Refuge. Reservations Required.
1:30 – 3:30 Tour the Butterfly Garden with Docents on hand to help identify plants and Butterflies.
2:30 Tram Tour of the Refuge. Reservations Required.
WHAT TO BRING:
Volunteers will be outside most of the day, managing traffic, parking cars, etc. Cool clothes, bug spray, sunscreen, boots/tennis shoes, a sack lunch (or purchase food from the Ice Hole Food Truck), and a water bottle (the refuge has a bottle refill station in the Visitor Center.)
