Sue Makuta, Class of 2021
There is a saying, “Bloom where you are planted.” I was born and raised in Colorado. I grew up in Cheyenne Canyon in the foothills of Colorado Springs. Being outside, exploring the canyons, raising gardens with my grandparents and mom, and enjoying nature were my playgrounds and activities. As anyone who knows me is well aware, I miss Colorado very much.
However, through this wonderful chapter of Texas Master Naturalists, I have been able to truly bloom where I am planted in Texas. I have met so many amazing people, learned so much and found access to such rewarding opportunities.
To record the last 500 hours I have volunteered with Blackland Prairie Raptor Center in Rehab, Education and events. I am at PISD’s Holifield Science Learning Center in the Animal Room and as an Outdoor Education Instructor. I am involved at the Heard with butterfly pinning and butterfly house docent, as a certified trail guide, working the Native Plant Sale and docent for events. Not this season, but I also worked in the gardens at Heritage Farmstead. Within the chapter, I am involved with Hospitality and the Education Committee.
I love being a Texas Master Naturalist.
