Our Tribe’s Fortune 250 Hours – Sue Kacines, Class of 2021

08/06/2025 by mconnally

Sue Kacines

What inspired you to become a Master Naturalist?

It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and finally had the time to do it!

On what type of projects do you typically spend your service hours, or are they varied?

I spend all of my service hours at Connemara Meadow Nature Preserve, leading guided walks and serving as the foundation secretary. Connemara is a hidden natural gem nestled between neighborhoods and just down the road from where I live.

When you were taking the Master Naturalist classes, do you have a favorite lesson that has stuck with you?

The learning field trips were the best part – I especially enjoyed experiencing and learning about a couple of the rare remnant prairies that we have in the area – Parkhill Prairie and Clymer Meadow were two of my favorites.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your background, and perhaps what you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy running, especially in nature. Recently, I’ve been running 5K every morning on the beautiful trails we have in Allen. I also enjoy traveling to new places and love exploring the hiking trails wherever I visit. I also attempt to take photos of birds, flowers, butterflies… and enjoy identifying those I don’t know with iNaturalist.

Is there one thing that you’d like to tell others who are thinking of becoming a Master Naturalist or perhaps current members who might need a little bit of inspiration?

Just do it! “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks” – John Muir
