Arbor Hills Nature Preserve recently benefited from a tremendous day of community service during Ribbon Communications’ annual “Ribbon Day” volunteer event. Approximately 70 employees participated in projects focused on improving both the environment and the local community.
Volunteers divided into several teams throughout the day. One group focused on litter removal across the preserve, helping keep trails and natural areas clean for both wildlife and visitors. Another team of about 30 volunteers tackled invasive privet removal, an important habitat restoration effort that helps native plants and ecosystems recover and thrive. A third group assembled snack bags for individuals and families in need, extending the spirit of service beyond the preserve itself.
As a Texas Master Naturalist with the Blackland Prairie Chapter, I had the opportunity to work alongside the privet removal crew. The volunteers showed incredible enthusiasm and dedication while learning about the ecological importance of removing invasive species from natural areas. Privet can quickly dominate understory habitats, crowding out native vegetation that supports birds, pollinators, and other wildlife. By removing these invasive plants, the volunteers directly contributed to improving biodiversity and habitat health at Arbor Hills.
Events like Ribbon Day demonstrate the powerful impact community partnerships can have on conservation and stewardship efforts. The combined efforts of corporate volunteers, local organizations, and Texas Master Naturalists help preserve and restore important natural spaces for future generations.
A sincere thank you goes to Ribbon Communications and all of the volunteers who dedicated their time and energy to making a difference at Arbor Hills Nature.
