June was a Fabulous Month for Mothing!

June was a record-breaking month for the Moth Squad, featuring over 230 enthusiastic attendees across two incredible nights in Richardson and Plano. From rare Luna Moths to a historic, first-ever Texas recording of a Nutmeg Underwing, our latest mothing adventures proved that the night shift is truly full of wonders!

Ain’t no Party like a Moth Night Party with Sam Kieschnick, Urban Wildlife Biologist in McKinney!

Step into the wild after dark!
Using special UV lights, we’ll attract and observe moths and other nighttime species as part of a Mothing BioBlitz, a snapshot of the biodiversity in McKinney. See moths and other nocturnal insects up close, learn how to use the iNaturalist app to record observations, and help us document species that call McKinney home!

Hey everyone! Get ready for a night of discovery at the 4th Annual Connemara Meadow Preserve Mothing Event on Saturday, September 13, from 7 PM to 9 PM.

Join the Blackland Prairie Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists for this free and family-friendly event. We’ll set up special lights to attract all kinds of nocturnal moths and other cool insects. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see the preserve in a whole new light and learn about these amazing creatures. We can’t wait to see you there.

Summer Mothing with TPWD’s Sam Kieschnick At Oak Point Park

Leah Justice, Class of 2021 – It was a typical hot and humid summer night at the recent mothing event at Oak Point on June 15th.  Sam Keischnick spoke to the crowd of park visitors and master naturalists about insects that we might see.  The kids in the audience were very excited to interact with a Common Green Darner dragonfly that showed up on one of the screens early in the evening.

Frisco Grand Park Mothing Event with Sam Kieschnick – April 29, 2023

Rick Travis, 2018 – On April 29, our chapter partnered with the Frisco Parks Department to hold a Mothing Event at Grand Park, in support of the iNaturalist City Challenge. It was a real treat and a wonderful experience for all those that attended, which included not only several members of our chapter, but also TMN’s from surrounding chapters, and several families from the Frisco area!
