In this talk we will meet Pliny the Elder, naval and army commander in the early Roman Empire, natural philosopher, and author of one of our oldest surviving writings about bees. Pliny died in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius (AD 79), but left us with his impression of humanity’s understanding of honey bees in his time. In this presentation we will go on a fact-checking journey, examining many of Pliny’s statements about bees, pulled verbatim from his “Naturalis Historia”, and comparing them to our modern understanding of what he got right and what he got wrong.
