Our next Prairie Seekers adventure will take place in southern Montague County, near the LBJ National Grasslands at the Thomsen Foundation, LLC. Our special guide will be Dr. Lisa Bellows, Foundation Director and retired Chair of the Science Division at North Central Texas College in Gainesville.
From their website: “Thomsen Foundation was established in 1982 by C.J. (Tommy) and Cissy Thomsen. The Thomsens had two primary goals: To provide a place in nature where others, especially children, could experience time on the land while learning and exploring; and to add to the body of knowledge about nature through research. They purchased 600 acres in the Cross Timbers Region of Texas and dedicated the land to Thomsen Foundation as part of the operating foundation to fulfil their goals of education and research in nature.”
The Foundation’s property is intricate and diverse, with limestone mesa, sandy Cross Timbers lowland and riparian/wetland biotic communities to explore. Extensive landscape-scale restoration and management have been ongoing since its acquisition. Besides covering plant ID and general prairie ecology, we will make comparisons between the plant communities on the mesa top and the sandy valley below it. We’ll also discuss land management techniques and goals for the property.
Registrants will receive additional information and detailed directions to the site. Lunch will be provided by the Foundation. Please join us!
