Trash Free Gulf: Litter Cleanup Along the Brazos River

May 21 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

The Trash Free Gulf Campaign is launching in May and one of its primary goals is to prevent 800 tons of trash from reaching the Gulf of Mexico. This challenge is presented by The Gulf Trust and H-E-B’s Our Texas, Our Future. We are answering the call by organizing a cleanup along the Brazos River at the Hwy 105 bridge near Navasota in northeast Washington County.

UPDATE 5/14: Recent rains have pushed the Brazos beyond a safe paddling threshold, so we’ve downgraded this outing to a clean up on the grounds at the Hwy 105 crossing near Navasota. We’ll be meeting at the access road below the bridge at 9:30 on Wednesday May 21 and will pick up litter for about 2 hours (or a bit longer pending weather).

Please bring plenty of water and wear boots and jeans or equivalent as we’ll be near high grass and possibly snakes this time of year.

Those of you who volunteered to paddle will be given a priority for our next planned river clean up (most likely in the fall).

In preparation for this clean up, we solicited a kit of supplies from the Trash Free Gulf Foundation and would like to put these items to good use. If you are interested in helping us with meeting the May Challenge but can’t make it on May 21, we’ll be bringing these supplies to the Chapter Meeting on Saturday. If you would like to pick up some trash at a waterway nearer to you, we’re making these available to increase our overall impact in May.

Please contact Tayvis Dunnahoe or Chuck Babbs if you have any questions or need further information.

WHEN: Wednesday May 21, 2025, starting at 9:30 a.m. till 12 noon.

WHERE: Brazos River at the Hwy 105 Bridge  just outside Navasota.

WHAT TO BRING: Drinking water, sun protection, boots and long pants.
