Volunteer and Advanced Training Opportunity: Bryophyte Collecting

July 8 @ 8:45 am - 12:00 pm
>>>>>>>Record in VMS as:
  • If you are a trained bryophyte collector and collect specimens, use volunteer service code, ” Citizen Science” and include your travel time. In your VMS description, state “Collected bryophyte specimens at Blue Willow Farm in La Grange for the TAMU Tracy Herbarium, plus travel.”
  • If you attend as an interested party to learn more about bryophyte collecting, use advanced training code (without travel time),  “AT: TMN Chapter Program”.  In your VMS description, state “Participated in field trip  at Blue Willow Farm in La Grange with TAMU Tracy Herbarium curator to learn about collecting bryophyte specimens.”
Earlier this year, a group of TMN GLC members participated in bryophyte (mosses and liverworts) collection training to collect specimens for TAMU’s Tracy Herbarium. Curator, Dale Kruse, has plans to write a Texas Bryophyte Guide…the first not only in Texas but in the South! We completed a collection period this past Spring and with the rains in May and June, opened a new collection period that will run through July 18th. If you were unable to attend the bryophyte training earlier this year, this is your opportunity to join us at Blue Willow Farm in La Grange, owned by the Tiemanns (fellow GLCers). This will NOT be technical bryophyte collecting training, but rather a field trip during which curator Dale will collect bryophytes alongside trained GLC member. Any chapter member is welcome to come out to observe and ask questions which may help you decide if bryophyte collecting is something you are interested in training for in January/February next year.
Bryophyte Collecting Field Trip
Wed, 7/8/26, from 9a-noon (important to arrive by 8:45a to ensure we get out before it gets too hot though we will be in the shade most of the time…noon is an approximate time and you may leave earlier if desired) – Blue Willow Farm, look for a white arched entrance.
  • Reference for bryophyte collectors resources: Bryophyte Collecting Project Process and Resources   Please bring your bryophyte collecting supplies (bags, pens, loupe, collecting bag, etc.)
  • WATER & SNACKS – please bring plenty of water and snacks to take with you into the forested riparian area
  • Sun protection: There is a walk from the forest to the farm buildings that will be all sun so plan accordingly.
  • Bug protection: The walk will be across a grassy, but mostly mowed prairie and the collecting will be getting off the path so plan for mosquitos and chiggers.
  • Footwear: We will be walking on a forest floor so boots are recommended.
