Bamberger Ranch Spring Bird Count (Qualifies for Volunteer Service Hours)

March 20, 2015 by glennkleinert

The Balcones Chapter MN is hosting a Spring Bird Count at the Bamberger Ranch on Sunday, April 19th.  Marsha May with the TPWD will be facilitating the count.  You are welcome to arrive on Saturday, April 18th, after 6 p.m. to spend the night at the Center.  The facility is a bunk house with plenty of beds (boys on one side and girls on the other).  If spending the night bring your own linens, pillow and towels.  If enough of us are spending Saturday night, a potluck will be planned for Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m.  Bring your own “no cook” breakfast and lunch for Sunday.  Plan to supply your own cooler.

Sunday morning we will gather at the Center at 7:00 a.m. for assignments and coffee.  The count will begin at 7:15 a.m. and we will gather back at the Center at 11:30 a.m. for the tally.  The terrain is rugged so wear sturdy boots or shoes and field clothes.  Bring rain gear, binoculars and lots of water.  Please contact Marsha May by Monday, April 13th if you are going to join us, and also let Marsha know if you will be arriving Saturday evening or Sunday morning.  She can be contacted at :  [email protected]

Directions:  From Austin take 290 West to junction with 281; turn right onto 281 and you will immediately go over the bridge that crosses Miller Creek; immediately turn left across the median and the Southbound lane of 281 and enter a county road identified as Miller Creek Loop – CR 203.  Drive 2.3 miles to a “Y” intersection with the left fork marked for Diamond X Ranch.  Take the right fork and continue .9 miles to 4 mailboxes with 2341 on the black mailbox and a road that “T’s” into Miller Creek Loop from the left.  That road is Blue Ridge Drive (usually has a road sign); turn left and drive .7 miles to the Selah Gate.  Stay on the main road for 2.9 miles to get to the Center.
