Those of you participating in the Monarch curriculum, monarch and pollinator program development contact Cindy Fronk, if you have not already done so, regarding scheduling a meeting to ensure all volunteers know exactly what their contribution to the effort will be.
The Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge (BCNWR) has opportunities for volunteers to assist in several ongoing projects. Some of the work will be at the refuge, and some work can be accomplished at home. Most of the work is of a planning nature and will be inside out of the summer heat! For those of you interested in learning more about the refuge and becoming involved in their programs, this is your opportunity. They are requesting help in the following areas:
Pollinator (monarch) program development assistant: need one or two volunteers to assist with converting Nevada curriculum and monarch material to Texas. Some or all of the program development can be done at home. This will require volunteers with creativity, resourcefulness and a passion for pollinators and monarchs in order to produce a fun, learning hands on experience for elementary students. The program should focus on the habitat provided by the refuge. Copies of the Nevada curriculum can be sent via Dropbox for review.
Receptionist/Greeter: The refuge needs a front office assistant that can greet visitors, enter volunteer hours, provide info on the refuge, make copies, answer telephone, keep the area clean and tidy, water the pollinator garden in front of the building , pick up mail, etc. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Volunteers will need to familiarize themselves with the refuge and can work any combination of days and hours such as Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Retired Teacher/Current Teacher or Teachers, anyone with curriculum expertise: assist the refuge Environmental Education Specialist with updating the Bridges to Birding and Going Buggy EE programs. This will require some work from home cutting and pasting, researching, making displays, some sewing and packaging. There are 18 boxes for each of the program stations which can be used as a go-by and there are also teaching guides for each one. Each of the boxes will need to have made a complete set of instructions, a guide, and a list of supplies provided for the users.
Anyone interested in volunteering to help in any of these areas should contact Cindy Fronk at [email protected] or by telephone at 512-339-9432 ext. 70.
