Event Summary:
The Caracaras’ Place in the Ecosystem
Event Description:
An ecosystem consists of all the organisms living within an area and the interactions between them and the physical environment. All ecosystems involve the transfer of energy, starting with the producers—the plant communities that convert sunlight into chemical energy through photosynthesis and depend on various avenues of pollination to reproduce. This plant matter then becomes a food source for a pyramid of consumers from insects to predators at the top of the food chain. Caracaras, as opportunistic birds of prey, eat just about anything they can find. They play an important role in any ecosystem of which they are a part.
This brings us to the Special Program sponsored by Bexar Audubon Society on Thursday, October 14 at 6:30 PM, in which Austin author Jonathan Meiburg will discuss his book, A Most Remarkable Creature: The Hidden Life and Epic Journey of the World’s Smartest Birds of Prey—the caracara. This program is offered in support of the 2021 Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival.
