Webinar Date: 03/17/2022
Webinar Time: 7:00p-8:00p
Webinar Summary:
Learn about the Texas Hill Country.
Webinar Description:
Lisa O’Donnell, a Senior Biologist for the City of Austin’s Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, will speak about her research into the ecology of the Texas Hill Country and how it shapes informed land management decisions, including protection of the Golden-cheeked Warbler, Black-capped Vireo, karst invertebrates, aquatic salamanders, and rare plants that occur within the preserve. She will explore the ecological history of the Texas Hill Country, including the common myth that the Hill Country was originally an extensive grassland/savanna. She will review firsthand eyewitness accounts, maps, photos and field survey notes spanning a 300-year time period. These historical documents will be presented within the context of major historical events, ecoregions, and the Balcones Escarpment, a geologic fault zone that separates the Blackland Prairie from the Hill Country. She will then take a closer look at the history of a couple of tracts within the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve over the last century.
This meeting will take place using Zoom Web Conferencing. Travis Audubon e-newsletter recipients will receive the meeting credentials via email in March. If you would like to attend the meeting but do not receive our e-newsletter, please contact caley@travisaudubon.org.
