Event Summary:
A webinar with Dr. Andrew Busch
Event Description:
Austin is a city heavily invested in environmental consciousness, access to natural spaces, and sustainable policy. Yet it is also a city that has consistently lost African American population share and demonstrates acute levels of economic segregation even as it grows rapidly. This talk explores how Austin’s environmental identity helped to shape the city’s contemporary landscape and how it contributed to the racial inequity evident in Austin today. It looks at green gentrification as an outcome of a century of public policy and economic decisions that tied environmental amenities, economic growth, and racial segregation together. The consequences are still visible in the city today, where minoritized groups lack access to environmental amenities and bear a disproportionate share of environmental burdens. While green gentrification is most obvious in Austin, other large Texas metros demonstrate similar trends.
Cost: no charge
