Come and learn about the many uses of Texas Sotol (Dasylirion texanum)
Event Description:
Come and learn about the many uses of Texas Sotol (Dasylirion texanum) Dasylirion is a genus of North American plants in the asparagus family, all native to Mexico, with the ranges of three species also extending into the southwestern United States. Texas Sotol has been important to people for thousands of years. Its bulbs were dug up, roasted in earth ovens, then pounded into an edible flour that could be stored and used for months. The leaves were woven into mats, baskets or cordage. The woody flower stalk was split and used for a hearth board as part of the friction fire starting tool kit. The workshop will include hands-on activities such as making cordage, coil basket weaving, and starting a friction fire. It will end with a two-hour hike to a “sotol forest.”
