Laredo Birding Festival
February 1-4, 2023
Guest Speaker Laura Keene shares her motives for doing a big year, and the adventures involved as she traveled to each corner of the ABA area from the lush beauty of Hawaii to the vast wilderness of Alaska. She will share the job of her journeys – the sights, the people, the wildlife – as she lived her big year dream, immersed in the healing power of birding. Free event.
Laura Keene embarked upon a year long journey of seeing and photographing as many species of birds as possible in the ABA area. She recorded 815 species, making her one of the four Big Year birders that year to break the previous ABA record. But her record was unique in that she documented 802 of those species with diagnostic images of 792 species plus audio recordings of another 10. She thus hold the ABA record for a distinctive “Photographic Big Year” category.
She now lives in the Texas Hill Country and is active in the conservation and wildlife management program for the Laurel Canyon Ranch Community preserve. She is the current chair of the ABA Recording Standards and Ethics Committee. Her wildlife photography has been published in multiple outlets.
