Event Time: 1:00p-2:30p
Event Summary:
Learn how through the study of paleontology we learn how life, landscapes, and climate have changed over time and how living things responded to those changes.
Event Description:
Join Dr. Susan Longacre on the study of paleontology, beginning with the questions; What is a fossil? How are they preserved? She will cover the major animals groups found in the fossil record and review how fossils are used and what they tell us about past Earth history.
Feel free to bring your fossilized treasures for show and tell.
Although born in Los Angeles, Susan’s family moved a lot with her father’s geologic work assignments through several western US oil provinces, finally for many years in the Gulf Coast offshore. After getting BS and PhD degrees at The University of Texas at Austin, Susan and her husband Kenneth moved to Houston, where they both began their careers. Though now retired from Chevron, half of Susan’s 34 years in the energy industry was with Getty Oil Company; the other, with Texaco and Chevron. For both companies, she was a research specialist in carbonate rocks. She was always based in Houston, but Susan’s projects and teaching took her around the globe and through many geologic Periods.
Her long-time love of paleontology and decades of association with the Geology Department at UT (now, the Jackson School of Geosciences) have contributed greatly to the variety and depth of artwork and fossil material that are currently on display in “Fossils: Clues to the Past”.
Cost: $10.00
