Event Description:
Presenter will review fire ecology and its role in shaping the environment of the Texas Hill Country. The focus will turn to fire as a modern-day tool in restoration and management, highlighting procedures and outcomes. Presenter will emphasize the team effort required by a burn association and how volunteer contributions are critical for safe and successful implementation. After classroom instruction supported by PowerPoint, participants will tour sites on the Kerr WMA to see before and after examples of areas where Prescribed Burning is employed.
Deanna’s love for the outdoors prompted her to seek a Wildlife Ecology and Management degree from Texas A&M University. Upon graduation, she accepted a position as an Urban Wildlife Biologist in San Antonio with USDA-Wildlife Services. Making a move to the Kerrville area, she worked with her husband in the private industry as a consultant and land manager and eventually started work with the Kerr County Soil and Water Conservation District. Although it started out part-time, this job became a favorite, as it involved both conservation planning with landowners and outreach programs to the public and youth. In 2018, Deanna accepted her current position at the Kerr WMA with TPWD, a place that long held an interest to her not only because of the research and management done there, but because of the personal relationships with the staff there, past and present, that she looked up to in her career.
