Event Summary:
Students will learn how to use the smartphone app iNaturalist to assess local wildlife populations.
Event Description:
Craig Hensley, a biologist for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, will teach students how to use the smartphone app iNaturalist to assess local wildlife populations. He will explain the benefits their observations to the scientific community.
Mr. Hensley will explain the process and define/mark boundaries of the study area. Participants will record observations of as many different types of flora and fauna as possible. Observations are recorded through a smartphone application. Since the park has no Internet connections, Hensley will instruct students how to upload their observations once they are in an area with Internet access. He will challenge participants to continue to observe and participate in Texas Nature Trackers, as wells, other citizen science projects.
Craig Hensley holds a Master’s Degree in Zoology and B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife Management and is a federally-licensed bird bander. A native of Iowa, he has been a naturalist and interpreter for more than 30 years, from Minnesota to Texas. He currently heads Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Nature Tracker program.
Students will check in at the Lost Maples SNA visitor center and proceed to the designated picnic table area where Hensley will give further instructions.
