A brief introduction to benthic macroinvertebrates, where they live, and why they live there, along with some super cool photos of what they look like under high magnification.
Event Description:
Tiny spineless creatures called benthic macroinvertebrates live on the bottom of our streams and creeks and respond to changes in water quality over time. These amazing creatures have evolved fascinating ways to cope with life underwater and avoid or persist under adverse environmental conditions! By collecting, identifying, and counting them, environmental scientists can learn more about the health of a stream. Scientists have been scooping these organisms as a part of the Environmental Integrity Index (EII) assessing the water quality, ecological integrity, and biological complexity of Austin’s creeks for over 25 years. Todd will give us a brief introduction to benthic macroinvertebrates, where they live, and why they live there, along with some super cool photos of what they look like under high magnification.
