Event Summary: Come and learn about the early men and women explorers and settlers who came to discover Texas, and the rich natural history that they recorded in print and paint.
Event Description: The natural history of Texas is as big as the state. Many men and women came to discover and record the state’s diverse flora and fauna, leaving journals, letters, records and paintings of their findings. Our speakers have researched these early settlers, and have a wealth of interesting information to share.
Lonnie Childs semi-retired in 2001to the Fredericksburg area where he has pursued his interests in history, natural history, and land conservation. He is a graduate of Texas University in Austin. He has been involved with several non-profit groups, including the Gillespie County Historical Society, Texas Master Naturalist, Native Plant Society of Texas and is currently the President of the Friends of Fredericksburg Nature Center.
Katherine Peake is an amateur historian researching the lives of early Hill Country settlers through court records, letters, memoirs and interviews. She is a Texas Master Naturalist, a past Fredericksburg Municipal Judge, and Executive Director of a statewide non-profit and a community volunteer. She currently resides in the Dripping Springs area.
