Event Summary:
A story of a quest to convert most of a yard in Boerne to native plants with the idea that if you build it, they (the pollinators and others) will come.
Event Description:
Bexar Audubon Society of San Antonio (BAS) Monthly Meeting
Educator and naturalist Craig Hensley has long been an advocate for converting residential biological deserts to natural habitats. In 2018, he and his wife, Master Naturalist Terry Lashley, began a quest to convert most of their yard in Boerne to native plants with the idea that if you build it, they (the pollinators and others) will come. Through purchase and propagation of natives, a yard of non-natives has transitioned to a place, tiny though it is, where birds, bees, butterflies and so much more now visit throughout the year. Join us to learn how they went about the process, see the results of this on-going effort, and become inspired to take steps in your own yard.
Craig Hensley is a long-time naturalist and outdoor educator, having worked in nature centers from Minnesota and Nebraska to Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas. Craig has worked for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for most of the past 14 years as a Park Interpreter and Resource Specialist at Guadalupe River State Park and Honey Creek State Natural Area, as a Wildlife Biologist for Kendall and Comal Counties, and for the past five years as one of two Texas Nature Trackers Biologists. He is an avid birder, a chaser of butterflies, dragons, and damsels, a grower of native plants, and a nature photographer of sorts. He has two grown children, Noah and Jennifer, and five grandchildren in Boston and New Zealand.
