Event Summary:
This workshop offers instruction on Merlin and eBird, to make bird identification easier and more accurate and record keeping and data submission efficient and beneficial to both the individual birder and the birding community.
Event Description:
Birding is a wonderful outdoor activity, but, like other activities, it takes developing a skill set and practice to be proficient. We need to know how to (1) identify the birds we contact and (2) record and report the data as accurately as possible if we want our birding efforts to benefit us, other birders, and the birds themselves. That’s where Merlin and eBird come in to help.
This workshop offers instruction on these two free digital tools from Cornell Lab of Ornithology that will help birders of all levels: to make bird identification easier and more accurate and record keeping and data submission efficient and beneficial to both the individual birder and the birding community.
Merlin and eBird were originally intended for beginner birders; they have now developed so that they are helpful for birders of all levels—those who have been birding a while and want to know more about how to make it easier OR people new to birding who want to learn how to make Merlin and eBird work for them. The tools we discuss in this workshop will NOT take the place of knowing and practicing basic birding skills. But whether you consider yourself a beginner birder or an accomplished birder, you will benefit from this workshop.
Merlin and eBird work together off the same powerful database; they will help you be a better birder and also make you a valuable Community Scientist.
All the resources we use and mention in this workshop are available online or in a resource folder you will receive after the program so you can review what you learn. Birders proficient in using both digital tools will be on hand to help you, whether you use iPhone or Android, Apple or PC
You must bring your Smart Phone; bring a Laptop Computer if you have one, but that is not required.
The objective of Audubon is to bend the curve upward for birds. These FREE digital tools will help us all contribute to that
And that’s important to the future of birds.
