Event Summary: This workshop will highlight current and past research aimed at understanding the role of fire and grazing in
the management of chemically defended plants, including common, invasive shrub species such as the redberry juniper
and honey mesquite.
Event Description: Toxic plants cause an estimated $50 million to $100 million in livestock losses in Texas every year. Additionally, many range plants, including redberry juniper and mesquite contain chemical compounds that affect livestock preference and reduce grazeable acres. This workshop will highlight management strategies to increase the profitability and productivity of rangeland managers in Texas.
Featured Topics:
Toxic and chemically defended plant management
Targeted approaches to fire and grazing
Highlighting current research from RWFM graduate students
Tour of research plots and/or facilities
Using the new AgriLife Toxic Plant Management app
Funding for this project is provided by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service’s (NRCS) Grazing Lands
