Learn how to construct Nature Boxes and give presentation of Butterflies, Bats and Frogs, aligned with the new TEKS that the Cibolo Nature Center Outreach Nature Box Program uses when they visit Boerne ISD Elementary Schools
Event Description:
Presentations of Butterflies, Bats, and Frogs aligned with the new TEKS that the Cibolo Nature Center Outreach Nature Box Program uses when they visit Boerne ISD Elementary Schools every Wednesday and Thursday from October to May are covered in the workshop with the hope that we can encourage volunteers to join us this academic year.
This workshop will meet at the Cibolo Nature Center Auditorium. The Program is free and all materials are provided but a RSVP needs to be sent to cibolo.link/box or scan the QR code of our handout. We will not have another workshop until January. Nature Box volunteers meet 2 Mondays a month to plan presentations for the programs requested by the 8 Boerne Elementary Schools. We visit one school a day every Wednesday and Thursday to make nature and science hands-on presentations of 30 to 45 minutes to each class of specific grade level. We leave a box of books and activities related to the topic for a week. Volunteers choose the days that best fit their calendar. We will be providing snacks, but will finish before lunch.
Kathleen Ward (Kathy) has a Ph.D in Science Education. She has taught science at all levels from Kindergarten to Graduate school for 38 years. She jointed Hill Country Master Naturalist in 2012 and was President, Vice-President, and Past President. Currently she has over 7,000 hours of volunteering. She has served as an officer of both Boerne NPSOT and State NPSOT. She has been the Geology Team of Albert and Bessie Kronkosky State Natural Area since 2013. Kathy has been a co-director of the Nature Box volunteers since 2006. I will be assisted by several of our members during the presentation. Before Covid occured, we were presenting to 8,000 students a year. We stopped the program during Covid and started up last year. Kathy’s university background includes an undergraduate degree in geology, a master’s degree in biology, and a doctorate degree in science education. In the past we have made presentations to Hill Country Master Naturalists and have them working with us.
