January – Regenerative Ranching and the Water Cycle, Presenter: Peggy Sechrist  Water and soil are critical natural resources in the Texas Hill County, something ranchers are even more acutely aware of. This month we welcome Peggy Sechrist, an expert in the practice of regenerative ranching, who will speak about grazing management and its relationship to the water cycle.  About our speaker: Peggy Sechrist has over 35 years of experience with regenerative agriculture and ranching practices. A professionally certified educator in holistic management and former advisor to the national Soil for Water Initiative, her natural approach has helped to improve degraded landscapes through restoration of native species and careful management of available water.

February – Plastics- Impacts on the Environment, How to minimize use of plastic on day to day life, Presenter: Karen Taylor  State Chair for the Texas Gardening School (TGC) and involved in the TGC’s Gardening Study School in San Antonio this year

Plastics are part of our daily lives. When plastic deteriorates, it does not go away but becomes small particles called microplastics. Join us this month to learn how microplastics affect the air and soil in the Texas Hill Country and how much plastics and microplastics are an integral part of our environment and lives, found in our water, food, and throughout our bodies. Also learn what each of us can do to help reduce this persistent problem.

March –  City Nature Challenge and INaturalist, Presenter: Peter Joseph Hernandez, and  Suanne Pyle

The City Nature Challenge is an international collaboration to encourage people to get out into nature and share what they observe. Over 80 thousand people last year submitted 2.4 million photos of 65 thousand species worldwide. This year’s four-day ‘bioblitz’ is scheduled for April 25-28, 2025. Our speakers at this month’s meeting of the Hill Country Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist program will share how easy it is to participate in this important event and how to use the iNaturalist app to take photos of what you see, identify them, and share them with others.
Speakers: Peter Joseph Hernandez has been a City Nature Challenge Coordinator since 2020 and is a member of the Alamo Area chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist program, Native Plant Society of Texas-San Antonio, and Guadalupe County Master Gardeners. Since retiring as a Senior Director in the telecommunications industry in 2015, he has devoted himself to advocating for biodiversity through citizen science and iNaturalist. Suanne Pyle is a  Texas Master Naturalist, South Texas Chapter, Class of 2020 graduate, a curator for the Birds of Texas Nature Trackers program, and has participated in the City Nature Challenge since 2019. A retired secondary school teacher, she loves to exercise her teaching talents in nature education.
