To survey ants, community scientists place bait on small plastic dishes along a transect. This bait is left out for a minimum of 30 minutes up to several hours. The trays are then collected in plastic bags and refrigerated. They are later identified and counted using provided stereo microscopes (Friday sign up). The ant survey allows researchers to monitor ant species diversity.
Requirements: None, but must be able to walk unaided on uneven terrain. Also persons known to be allergic to insect stings should not participate in this event as ant bites are possible. The survey held within the prairie so appropriate attire is highly recommended (e.g. closed toed shoes/boots/long pants/hat).
