Community scientists assess stream flow and sample macro invertebrates, fish, and other aquatic organisms alongside biologists from the San Antonio River Authority (SARA). The macro invertebrate samples taken from the creek bed are stored in the Cibolo Nature Center’s Ecology Lab where they are later identified. Macro invertebrates are biological indicators of water quality.
No pre-qualifications are needed for the fieldwork but the opportunity to assist with sampling within the creek usually occurs. Be prepared to enter the water.
Identification of macro invertebrates: It helps to have a working knowledge or familiarity with the different classes of macro invertebrates but is not a requirement. It is something that can be learned over time if the opportunity to try is taken. Hands-on training will be provided to interested parties. This would occur at later date and time after Wildlife Field Research week. If you are interested, please contact Darla Reid.
