Do you like to share the nature knowledge you have experienced with elementary-age children?
What is the Nature Box Program? It is the outreach program of Cibolo Center for Conservation in Boerne presented completely by volunteers. They have gathered items for over 60 nature and science items for programs correlated with the Texas Science Standards for the elementary classes for the different grade levels.
What do the docents do? At least 3 docents take a themed Nature Box requested by grade-level teachers (K-5 in Boerne) and make a presentation to each individual class that includes a story and hands-on learning. Docents choose when and what time they participate. Some volunteer once a week, some once a month or whenever they can.
When do they participate? Every Wednesday and Thursday from October to May.
How do they prepare? Every other Monday from 9 am to 11pm at Cibolo Nature Center Library if they are available. The next Monday meeting will be October 14 from 9 to 11am in the Cibolo Library. Other dates this year are October 28, November 11, December 2, and December 16.
How can you participate? Attend a Monday planning meeting or shadow a docent at a school presentation. Background check at Boerne ISD is needed.
