From Kathy Pittman:
We have an outreach opportunity that brings together our Brazoria County Master Gardeners, our Cradle of Texas Master Naturalist(TM) members and the Pearland Parks and Recreation staff at the Delores Fenwick Nature Center. Need some volunteer hours to finish out your re-certification? Interested in learning more about Texas native plants that support our wildlife? Wanted to pay a visit to the Delores Fenwick Nature Center, DFNC, in Pearland and just haven’t gotten a chance yet for that adventure? Then, this opportunity is for you!
What: DFNC Educational Pond and Native Garden Habitat Workdays
When: 3 Work Days: Thursday, August 29th, Saturday, August 31st, and Saturday, September 7th at 8 AM
Where: Delores Fenwick Nature Center, 5750 Magnolia Parkway, Pearland, 77584
What to Wear and Bring: You know the drill. Dress for the weather and wear work boots. Bring along your favorite gardening tools and gloves for weeding and pruning the native perennial garden. If anyone can bring along a wheelbarrow, that would be helpful.
What to Expect:
- We will be cleaning out invasive plants in the native garden space around the pond initially and once completed, some volunteers will venture into the shallow pond habitat to clean out any invasive plants. We will be identifying the native plants and cutting them back as needed. Any native plants removed will be available to volunteers to take home to their gardens.
- We will have access to the Nature Center facilities to cool off and tour the exhibits. Behind the Nature Center are multiple lakes with islands supporting a wide array of bird species and wildlife to observe.
- The Nature Center’s education leader, Katie Boughal will be available to guide us in our work and answer any questions you have about the Nature Center’s habitats and animals.
- Drinks and snacks will be provided.
Let Kathy know if you plan to attend any of the workdays so we can get a headcount. If you have any questions, contact JoAnne or Kathy.
