Wetland Planting – Eagle Nest Lake Unit
Message below from Curtis Jones, Refuge Manager San Bernard & Big Boggy NWRs:
Good Afternoon, Everyone,
We would like to invite you to join us for a wetland planting day on Thursday, December 11 at 9 am. The location is the Eagle Nest Lake unit of San Bernard NWR (meeting location attached as a Google Earth kmz). The planting sites are recently excavated wetlands that are sited on former rice fields. The plants are locally grown. We have available just over 1,500 4-inch pots to place around the shorelines for this event.
If weather cancels our event, we also have Friday, December 12 at 9 am as a backup date.
In the aerial image below the red polygon is our project site and the engineering plan shows the wetlands we restored in the former rice field area. There will be more planting events to follow but this event will be primarily supported by FWS staff.
If you would like to join us, please:
- Wear clothing and footwear that can become wet and potentially muddy. We won’t be wading in deep water but the soil can be mucky and contribute to falls.
- Bring some towels and a change of clothing in case you want to make sure your vehicle interior stays dry on the way home (just in case)
- Bring any gardening tools you already have, if you would like to use them; otherwise, let us know you would like to use one of our tools and we’ll make sure we have one for you
- Reply to: Jennifer Wilson, [email protected], Curtis Jones, [email protected] and Phillip Smith, [email protected] to let them know you are coming and share a mobile number where we can reach you the morning of the planting, in case we need to cancel or delay for weather concerns.
We will have a cooler with water and sport drinks available for everyone. We will be able to work with up to 15 people on this planting date. There also will be other wetland plantings beginning this January. If you would like to keep receiving emails about these events or would like us to add others that are interested, please let us know.
Thank you very much!
