Monthly Lake Hikes

Lake Abilene or sometimes at Abilene State Park if the Lake is closed. – Led by Big Country Chapter of Texas Master Naturalist member(s).

Join us each month for a guided hike at Abilene State Park and Lake Abilene! These hikes are a great way to explore the natural beauty of the Big Country while learning about local plants, wildlife, ecology, and seasonal changes.

Whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or just enjoy being outdoors, our monthly hikes are designed for all experience levels. Come enjoy fresh air, scenic views, and great company.


Time & Location

Time: 9:00 AM – Noon
Check-In: 8:45 AM at the Abilene State Park office (for parking pass)
Meeting Spot: Lake Abilene parking area by 9:00 AM (unless specified on park side)

What to Expect

  • Easy to moderate, guided nature hike
  • Learn about native plants, wildlife, and ecosystems
  • Family-friendly environment
  • “Out and back” format—turn around at any time

What to Bring

  • Water (maybe a light snack)
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Weather-appropriate clothing (layers recommended)

Fees & Park Information

  • $5.00 entry fee per person
  • Texas State Park Pass holders enter free
  • Children are welcome
  • Dogs are welcome on a 6-foot leash

  • This is an outdoor program and is weather dependent
  • If a hike must be canceled or rescheduled, updates will be posted on:
