Cali Bakker, Class of 2024
A big thank you to all those who attended our 3rd annual mothing event at Connemara! Whether you helped with a screen and lighting set-up or came to observe, you helped make our event a great one.
We had lots of curious children and adults ready to get curious about some neat flying critters of the night. Not only did we see moths, we saw grasshoppers, waterbugs/toe biters, and many other insects interested in the lights. The highlight for me (and a few others, I believe) was seeing a Luna Moth. Their size and beautiful, delicate, pale green color is a treat to witness. We also saw some Sphinx moths with fascinating camouflage capabilities. It looked so much like a dried leaf!
As an added treat, we heard owls, explored the meadow before sunset, and appreciated Connemara. It’s wonderful how, despite being in the middle of suburbia, a beautiful, wild preserve exists to help us connect to nature and experience the peace that comes from stepping away from some of our other daily tasks. We’re looking forward to our next mothing event and more time at Connemara!
