Topic: Vibrant Lichen Studies

Lichens—those intricate symbiotic organisms blending fungi and algae—are far more than humble patches on rocks and trees. This talk delves into the fascinating world of lichens, uncovering their vital ecological roles, from air quality indicators to symbiotic partnerships shaping diverse ecosystems. With a focus on vibrant, strikingly colorful species, we explore their hidden complexity, their importance in conservation, and their potential applications in environmental science. Whether you’re a casual nature observer or a dedicated researcher, this discussion highlights why lichens deserve a closer look.

Speaker:  Zane Liston is a Hays County Master Naturalist with a passion for research and science communication. She works for the Watershed Association in Wimberley, managing their archival legacy project and the Jacobs Well Community Garden. Her new role at the Watershed allows her to participate in practical conservation of critical lands to aquifer recharge. She received an MA from NYU’s Performance Studies department in 2021, with her graduate research focusing on the intersection of Art, Sociology, and Environmental Issues. Her research on dams and the Authority model in the Tennessee River watershed was published under peer review in the Design and Culture Journal’s Special Issue “Infrastructures of Harm” in 2023. Her passion for lichens began in the Hill Country winters, and she loves giving a voice to these wildly biodiverse and often understudied creatures.
