Event Summary:
Learn about Black Rails

Event Description:
The distribution and life history of the Black Rail is poorly studied in Texas. From 2015 to 2018, I studied the spatial ecology and habitat requirements of Black Rails in marshes of the Texas Gulf Coast. Through the application of occupancy models, radio telemetry, and capture-recapture studies, I provide an evaluation of factors that influence the distribution of Black Rails at multiple spatial scales in coastal Texas. More specifically, I developed a species distribution model for the species in coastal Texas to identify important areas for the bird on a landscape-scale, estimated home range size and examined habitat associations at the home-range scale, and looked at effects of disturbance from prescribed fire within Black Rail habitats.
