Event Date: 02/22/2022
Event Time: 9:00a-12:00p

Event Summary:
Learn how to identify golden cheeked warblers and participate in golden cheeked warbler surveys.

Event Description:
We will have both “surveyors” and “participants.” Surveyors make subjective determinations such as detection, estimated distance, etc. Participants may accompany surveyors to record data.

We will also be surveying a minimum set number of points at each site. The number of allowable surveyors is based on a commitment of ~25 points/surveyor. Each surveyor should be able to commit to completing about 25 points each. This limited number of surveyors is in order to reduce observer bias and increase our accuracy. Take this into consideration when selecting your surveyors whether that is staff or volunteers. If a staff member can’t commit this much time, a volunteer may need to take that surveyor “slot.”

Select participants based on ability to commit time for 25 points over the season
Everyone must pass both a skills and identification test.
Think about who is best at bird call id, estimating distance, has the best hearing, etc.
The season is March 25th thru June 1st.
These surveys are conducted off trail mostly and in rough terrain.

I can have 5 volunteers come with me to the training. If you pass you will then help me at South Llano River State Park during the season.

During the training, you will be tested on your song recognition and how well you can hear the song in the woods at varying distances.

Please dress for hiking. It won’t be too strenuous. Bring a sack lunch.
Make sure you bring water and study what a golden-cheeked warbler looks like vs other birds.
