Invasives and Alternative Native Plants

Event Description:

The March 5th chapter meeting will include a presentation by Deedy Wright on “I’m Being Invaded! What Can I Do?”. Her talk will define the term “invasive” and discuss reasons for how and why these plants are here, and the damage they do to our environment. In addition, Deedy will provide ecoregion-specific “alterNative” suggestions for some of the more common invasive plants.

You can attend the hybrid meeting in person at the Heard Museum in McKinney or online via Zoom. The meeting opens at 6:30, and at 7:00, Rodney Thomas, our chapter president will have a short chapter update, followed by the presentation.

Deedy Wright is a life-long Texas gardener. Her particular interests are native plants, xeriscape, and invasive plants. She has been an active member of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT) since 1996, when she joined the San Antonio chapter. She organized the Guadalupe NPSOT chapter in 2007 and New Braunfels Chapter in 2019. She served as president of the Guadalupe and New Braunfels chapters of NPSOT. She has also served four years as the Vice-President of Education on the state NPSOT board. Until recently, she chaired the state committee on invasive plants.
Deedy has completed the Texas Invaders training on invasive plants and multiple native plant courses at the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center. She served on the Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP) Steering Committee for six years, and is also an NLCP instructor, completing Levels 1-3 and serving on the sub-committee to write Level 4. In addition, she was a certified Master Gardener for 15 years in Bexar and Guadalupe counties, with specialist training in propagation and vegetable gardening. A retired secondary language arts and social studies teacher, Deedy has taught and continues to teach adult continuing education classes on various native plant topics in the San Antonio / New Braunfels area.

The chapter holds its monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of the month. There is a social time at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend in person and via Zoom.
