Lights out Dallas Spring 2024

03/01/2024 by mconnally

From the Texas Conservation Alliance Newsletter 2-23-2024

Excitement is in the air as we gear up for the upcoming Spring Migration Season! Soon, our city will be abuzz with the sights and sounds of migratory birds making their journey. We are preparing to be on the lookout each morning and continue raising awareness of the dangers that light pollution poses to migratory wildlife.

The three pillars of Lights Out, Dallas are collision monitoring, education, and advocacy. Thus far, our efforts have focused primarily on collision monitoring surveys, limiting our capacity for education and advocacy. Starting this season, the number of survey days in downtown Dallas will be decreased, allowing us to balance our time more evenly across the campaign’s three pillars. Stay tuned for upcoming Lights Out events and updates as we celebrate the wonder of migration together and take action to make our skies safer!

Surveys Begin Soon!

Spring surveys will begin March 12 and end June 1. Unlike previous seasons, surveys will be conducted 7 days a week during Peak Migration (April 22 – May 12). Outside of the Peak Migration period, surveys will take place 4 days a week on Tuedays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Need a reminder of the dates? Please refer to the calendar. Blue highlighted days indicate survey days. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for the days they plan to participate.

When:   March 12 – April 20 Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat mornings   April 22 – May 12 (Peak Migration) Mon-Sun mornings May 13 – Jun 1 Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat mornings ALL surveys begin at 6 am and end around 8 am!
