Looking for an opportunity to get out in nature, test your knowledge of plants and animals, and participate in a friendly competition with cities worldwide? This advanced training is meant for you!
Join Scott Buckel, nature photographer and chapter expert on iNaturalist, in an all-new course designed to teach you how to use the tools employed by naturalists worldwide to participate in the annual City Nature Challenge.
The primary focus will be on iNaturalist, a system that provides a place to record and organize nature findings, meet other nature enthusiasts, and learn about the natural world and is becoming a major data source for citizen science. This AT will focus primarily on how to use iNaturalist on both personal computers and smartphones, with special emphasis on preparing you to participate in the upcoming City Nature Challenge (April 26 – May 5).
During the class, you will be learning to use the smartphone app, which we encourage to download and install in advance of the class. If you don’t have a smartphone or wish to use your regular camera to record and report observations, there are important roles in City Nature Challenge for you as well and these will also be presented during this AT.
The class will include an outdoor practice session to hone your skills for photographing and recording your observations in iNaturalist. Scott and his assistants will help guide the hands-on portion. Bring your smartphones!
