AT – Talk on Native Bees

October 5, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Tour of Watson Rare Native Plant Preserve and talk on “The bees you never hear about”

American Bumblebee

American Bumblebee

Hi Everyone:There has been much in the news about the decline of the honey bee.  Some may not be aware that the common honey bee is actually an exotic species in North America.  It originally came from Europe. So who pollinated flowers before the early settlers brought their “tame” bees to the western hemisphere?  Turns out there are many native species of bees.  Many of us don’t know much about these insects, and that is probably to our detriment.

On October 5, 2014 (Note this is a Sunday) starting at 10:00 am., Michael Eckenfels will lead a tour of Watson Rare Native Plant Preserve and talk to us on this topic:  Native Bees “The Bees You Never Hear About.”

I recently heard Michael give a presentation on the subject to the Houston Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas.  It was very interesting, and I highly recommend that you come out on Oct. 5 and join us!

We shall also be looking at fall wildflowers.  Hopefully, the weather will be warm enough for insect activity, but not hot enough for heat prostration.  It is usually a pleasant time of year to be outdoors.
