Our chapter has been named 1st place winner in the civic/non-profit category for the bi-annual 2017 EPA/Gulf of Mexico program for our citizen science approach to confronting plastic pollution in our Gulf-coast community in 2016.Â
The award is sponsored by the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Gulf of Mexico Program to recognize extraordinary environmental stewardship aimed at protecting the Gulf of Mexico  This award covers 31 states that comprise the Gulf of Mexico watershed and also includes successful projects between the US, Mexico and the Caribbean. The criteria used for this award was the work should be innovative, beneficial, measurable (thanks VMS), educational and exceptional.  At last year’s TXMN conference, this chapter wide effort was awarded the project of the year.
The EPA/Gulf of Mexico program is creating 3 minute videos of each 1st place winner. Our video will be shared throughout the country to showcase the work we have done as TXMN citizen scientists taking the lead rather than waiting to take action against plastic pollution.Â
Thank you to everyone who volunteered in our many faceted approach to this cause. The work continues but we will definitely take time to celebrate on November 30th.
