The webinar will summarize several studies completed at various geographic scales and synthesize what we learned from that research into a path forward for conservation and management of the species in Texas.

8/16/2023-Houston toad Safe Harbor Agreement: Testing communication strategies to increase Houston toad Safe Harbor Agreement enrollment:  Given that the critically endangered Houston toad’s (Bufo houstonensis) habitat falls primarily within private lands, private landowner engagement is needed to increase the quantity and quality of available habitat. This research aims to increase private landowner enrollment in Houston toad Safe Harbor Agreements (SHAs) by designing and implementing strategic communication strategies. To do this, we will survey private landowners in Houston toad range to a) create typologies of landowners for use in targeted messaging, b) identify the most salient content, content framing, and communication delivery mechanisms for future messaging, and c) determine optimal Safe Harbor Agreements that best match the preferences of each typology of landowner. Using the results from this research, TPWD will be able to target their communications to the public, leading to improved attitudes towards SHAs, a higher likelihood that landowners will enroll in SHAs, and stronger landowner-TPWD relationships.
