Volunteer Tips

Each Texas Master Naturalist is required to complete 40 hours of service annually. Service is conducted in approved projects only.

Before committing to a project, find it in the list of approved projects. If you can't find the project in this list, it is likely NOT an approved project.

Each approved project is assigned a project code. This code is used when reporting hours worked in the Volunteer Managment System (VMS)

Can't remember how to get to VMS? Click here to go to the TPWD Volunteer Login

When entering your service, be sure to have the following handy:

  • the project code
  • date of your service
  • the number of hours you worked
  • a description of what you did
  • the number of miles you drove (roundtrip) and the amount of time driving
  • Yes! you can add your drive time to the amount of time you worked. Keep good records so you do not forget. One rule of thumb: your drive time cannot exceed your service time.

Please note: you cannot add drive time traveling to/from an AT.
