VOL – Exploration Green’s Squawk Walk

September 28 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

The Exploration Green Conservancy (EGC) board of directors is looking for a few of us good Texas Master Naturalists to help its Squawk Walk (an event co-sponsored with Houston Audubon) take wing and soar! (see what I did there?)

Saturday, September 28, 2024
8:00 am ‘til Noon
Exploration Green
In the Heart of Clear Lake
16205 Diana Lane, Houston, TX 77062

TxMNs will be assigned to one of the three stations discussed below. EGC representatives will provide orientation.

  • Bird Walks – Volunteers will be leading six, 45-minute, 1-mile-long walks around the lake to identify herons, egrets, cormorants, ducks, perching birds, etc. Spotting scope and binoculars will be provided.
  • Dip Netting – Volunteers will be leading a dip net exercise along the lake shore, identifying invertebrates and discussing insects generally. It’s always interesting to see what can be found along the shoreline. Nets, buckets, trays, pipettes, and magnifying glasses will be provided.
  • Intro to iNaturalist – Volunteers will introduce attendees to iNat, demonstrate its use, discuss its benefits to users and to citizen science, and encourage attendees to take part in a future BioBlitz. Each volunteer will be challenged to use iNat to identify at least four species during a walk around the lake – a flower, a tree, a bird, and an insect.

A great opportunity to sport your TxMN-branded shirt and GBAC name tag.

When reporting hours, use the opportunity: Nature Program – Public Outreach
